Meet the Candela® GentleMax Pro
A Gold Standard in Laser Hair Removal
When it comes to laser hair removal, the technology matters. The Candela® GentleMax Pro is part of a laser platform widely recognized as a gold standard in professional laser hair removal, backed by decades of clinical use and technological advancement.
What makes it different?
The GentleMax Pro combines two laser wavelengths in one system, allowing us to select the technology best suited to your skin tone and hair characteristics.
- 755 nm Alexandrite Laser | Fitzpatrick Skin Types I–III
- 1064 nm Nd:YAG Laser | Fitzpatrick Skin Types IV–VI
Particularly well suited for deeper skin tones, this wavelength penetrates more deeply and has less interaction with pigment in the skin’s surface, making it an important option when treating skin with more melanin.
Together, these wavelengths allow us to offer laser hair reduction for patients across the Fitzpatrick I through VI skin type spectrum.
The GentleMax Pro also features Candela’s Dynamic Cooling Device™, which delivers a brief cooling spray immediately before each laser pulse to help protect the skin’s surface and improve comfort during treatment.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works by delivering controlled energy into the hair follicle, where pigment in the hair absorbs the energy and converts it into heat. This heat damages structures responsible for hair growth, helping reduce the amount of hair that grows back over time.
Hair grows in cycles, and laser treatment is most effective when hair is in its active growth phase. Because not all follicles are in this phase at the same time, multiple sessions are needed to target hairs as they enter the appropriate stage of growth.
As you progress through your treatment series, you may notice:
- Less hair growing in treated areas
- Finer, less noticeable regrowth
- Longer intervals between shaving
- Fewer ingrown hairs and less shaving related irritation
Results develop gradually and vary by individual.

What Results Can You Expect?
Laser hair removal is best understood as long term hair reduction rather than a guarantee that every hair will be permanently eliminated.
Many patients begin noticing less regrowth after their initial treatments, with more significant improvements developing throughout a series.
Most patients require approximately 6 to 8 sessions, although some may need additional treatments depending on the area, hair growth patterns, and individual response.
Factors such as hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medical conditions can influence hair growth and may affect the number of sessions needed.
Maintenance treatments may be recommended to address regrowth over time.
Our goal is to help you understand what is realistic for your specific treatment area before beginning your series.
Is Laser Hair Removal Right for You?
The GentleMax Pro may be an option for patients who:
- Want to reduce unwanted facial or body hair
- Experience frequent ingrown hairs or irritation from shaving
- Prefer a longer lasting alternative to shaving, waxing, or threading
- Want a laser treatment tailored to their individual skin tone and hair characteristics
- Want to spend less time managing unwanted hair
Laser treatment generally works best on hair containing sufficient pigment. Very light blonde, white, gray, and some red hair may respond poorly.
A consultation or skin assessment allows us to review your medical history, medications, recent sun exposure, skin characteristics, and treatment goals to determine whether laser hair removal is appropriate.
Before and After Your Treatment
- Before Your Appointment:
Proper preparation helps us treat your skin more effectively and reduces the risk of unwanted reactions.
- Shave the treatment area the night before your appointment.
- Avoid waxing, plucking, tweezing, and threading for at least 6 weeks before treatment. These methods remove hair from the follicle, reducing the target for laser energy.
- Avoid tanning the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before treatment. This includes intentional sun tanning and tanning beds.
- Arrive with clean skin, free of lotions, oils, deodorant, or other products on the treatment area.
- Inform us of any medication changes, recent sun exposure, skin irritation, or changes in your medical history.
- After Your Appointment:
Temporary redness, warmth, or mild swelling around the hair follicles can occur and typically resolves within a few hours to a couple of days.
Avoid excessive heat, hot tubs, saunas, and intense exercise for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Avoid tanning the treated area for at least 2 weeks after treatment.
Apply broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher to exposed treated skin.
Avoid waxing, tweezing, plucking, or threading between sessions. Shaving is permitted as directed.
Follow the individualized aftercare instructions provided by our team.
Why Choose R&R Skin and Aesthetics?
Because the right technology is only part of the treatment.
At R&R Skin and Aesthetics, we believe that understanding your skin is just as important as the laser being used.
As a nurse practitioner owned medical aesthetics practice, our approach places an emphasis on clinical knowledge, patient safety, and individualized treatment planning.
We understand that skin tone, hair characteristics, medical history, and treatment goals can all influence how a patient responds to laser energy.
Rather than taking the same approach with every patient, we evaluate these factors when determining treatment settings and recommendations.
We also believe in being straightforward about what laser hair removal can and cannot accomplish. If your hair characteristics or medical history make you a less suitable candidate, we will discuss that with you.
Our goal is to provide a comfortable experience where you feel informed, your concerns are heard, and your treatment plan makes sense for you.
Personalized Aesthetics. Timeless Results.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most patients require approximately 6 to 8 treatments, although the total number varies based on hair thickness, treatment area, skin characteristics, and hormonal influences. Additional treatments and periodic maintenance may be needed.
Is laser hair removal painful?
You may feel a brief snapping or warming sensation with each laser pulse. The GentleMax Pro includes a built in cooling system designed to improve comfort and help protect the skin’s surface. Sensitivity varies depending on the treatment area and individual.
Can the GentleMax Pro treat darker skin tones?
Yes. The GentleMax Pro includes a 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser that is particularly well suited for deeper skin tones, including Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI. Appropriate wavelength selection, treatment settings, and patient assessment remain essential.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal provides long term hair reduction, but it does not guarantee that every hair will be permanently eliminated.
One reason is that hair follicles go through different growth phases. Laser treatment is most effective during the active growth phase, and not all hairs are in this phase at the time of treatment. Hairs that were not effectively targeted may become visible as they enter a new growth cycle.
Additionally, hormonal changes, genetics, and certain medical conditions can contribute to future hair growth.
This is why a series of sessions is recommended, and why some patients benefit from periodic maintenance treatments.
Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs?
Yes. By reducing hair growth, laser treatment may help decrease the frequency of ingrown hairs and irritation associated with shaving. It can also be beneficial for certain patients experiencing pseudofolliculitis barbae, commonly called razor bumps.
Can I have laser hair removal if I have a tan?
We recommend avoiding tanning the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after your appointment.
Recent tanning can increase the risk of skin reactions, including burns and changes in pigmentation. Even with technology designed to treat a wide range of skin tones, recent sun exposure and tanning must be considered before treatment.
If your skin is recently tanned or sunburned, your appointment may need to be postponed. Two weeks without tanning does not automatically mean your skin is ready for treatment.
Can I have laser hair removal while pregnant?
We recommend postponing elective laser hair removal during pregnancy because safety data are limited.
What is the difference between the Alexandrite and Nd: YAG lasers?
The GentleMax Pro combines two laser wavelengths, allowing us to select the technology best suited to your skin tone and hair characteristics.
The 755 nm Alexandrite laser is especially effective for treating unwanted hair in patients with lighter skin tones, generally Fitzpatrick types I through III.
The 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser is particularly well suited for deeper skin tones, including Fitzpatrick types IV through VI, because it penetrates more deeply and interacts less with pigment in the skin’s surface.
Both wavelengths are designed to reduce unwanted hair, but choosing the appropriate wavelength and settings is an important part of treatment planning.
